Fuel gas: Iowa Journeyperson Plumber Practice Questions
Gas pipe sizing (CFH and longest length), materials, installation, shutoff valves, sediment traps, testing, combustion air, venting.
Question 1
Calculation
Use 1,000 Btu per cubic foot for natural gas. A furnace is rated 80,000 Btu/h. What gas flow does it need?
Correct answer: 80 CFH
IFGC 2021 402.2 / UPC 2021 1208.4.1
Divide the input rating by the heating value of the gas. For natural gas at 1,000 Btu/ft³, CFH is Btu/h divided by 1,000.
Worked solution
1
Formula
CFH = Btu/h ÷ Btu per cubic foot
2
Values
CFH = 80,000 ÷ 1,000
3
Result
Flow = 80 CFH
Question 2
Calculation
Use 1,000 Btu per cubic foot. A house has a 100,000 Btu/h furnace, a 40,000 Btu/h water heater, a 65,000 Btu/h range and a 35,000 Btu/h dryer. What total gas load must the piping carry?
Correct answer: 240 CFH
IFGC 2021 402.2 / UPC 2021 1208.4.1
Add every appliance's input, then convert to CFH. Leaving out the dryer gives 205 CFH.
Use 2,500 Btu per cubic foot for propane (LP gas). A 50,000 Btu/h appliance runs on propane. What flow does it need?
Correct answer: 20 CFH
Trade practice (LP gas)
Propane has about 2,500 Btu per cubic foot, so the same appliance needs less volume than on natural gas. Using 1,000 gives 50 CFH.
Worked solution
1
Formula
CFH = Btu/h ÷ 2,500
2
Values
CFH = 50,000 ÷ 2,500
3
Result
Flow = 20 CFH
Question 4
In the longest length method of sizing gas pipe, which length is used to size every section of the system?
Correct answer: Meter to the most remote outlet
IFGC 2021 402.4.1 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
With the longest length method, the distance from the point of delivery to the farthest outlet is used for all sections; each section is then sized by the CFH it carries.
Question 5
Calculation
Use these capacities for this problem only, at a length of 60 ft: 1/2 inch carries 70 CFH, 3/4 inch 150 CFH, 1 inch 300 CFH. The meter-to-farthest-outlet length is 58 ft. The main serves a 100 CFH furnace and an 80 CFH range. What size is the main?
Correct answer: 1 inch
IFGC 2021 402.4.1 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
Round the length up to the next column, add the CFH carried by the section and choose the first size whose capacity is at least that load.
Worked solution
1
Formula
Use the 60-ft column (next length at or above 58 ft)
2
Values
Load = 100 + 80 = 180 CFH
3
Values
3/4 inch carries 150 < 180; 1 inch carries 300 ≥ 180
4
Result
Main = 1 inch
Question 6
Calculation
Same system, same capacities at 60 ft (1/2 inch 70 CFH, 3/4 inch 150 CFH). Using the longest length method, what size is the branch serving only the 100 CFH furnace?
Correct answer: 3/4 inch
IFGC 2021 402.4.1 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
Every section uses the longest length, not its own short length, so the furnace branch is sized at 60 ft for 100 CFH.
Worked solution
1
Formula
Branch load = 100 CFH, read in the 60-ft column
2
Values
1/2 inch carries 70 < 100; 3/4 inch carries 150 ≥ 100
3
Result
Branch = 3/4 inch
Question 7
Which pipe material is NOT allowed for fuel gas piping?
Correct answer: Cast iron
IFGC 2021 403.3.1 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
Cast iron pipe is not allowed for gas. Schedule 40 steel, listed CSST and polyethylene (underground, outdoors) are approved.
Question 8
When may copper tubing NOT be used for natural gas?
Correct answer: When the gas is high in hydrogen sulfide
IFGC 2021 403.4.3 / UPC 2021 1208.6.4.3
Hydrogen sulfide attacks copper, so copper and brass are limited to gas that is low in it (0.3 grains per 100 scf on average); many utilities forbid copper anyway.
Question 9
Where may polyethylene (PE) gas pipe be installed?
Correct answer: Outdoors, underground only
IFGC 2021 404.17 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
PE gas pipe is limited to outdoor underground use (it may rise above ground only in a listed riser). It is damaged by sunlight and has low heat resistance.
Question 10
What must be installed with buried plastic gas pipe so it can be located later?
Correct answer: An insulated tracer wire of at least 18 AWG
IFGC 2021 404.17 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
A tracer wire (18 AWG copper minimum, insulated) runs with the plastic pipe so locators can find it.
Question 11
Under the UPC, what is the minimum cover over underground gas piping where external damage is not likely?
Correct answer: 12 inches
UPC 2021 1210.1.1
The UPC requires at least 12 inches of cover, increased to 18 inches where external damage is likely. Where 12 inches cannot be provided, the pipe goes in conduit or is bridged.
Question 12
Where is gas piping prohibited?
Correct answer: Inside an air duct or a chimney
IFGC 2021 404.3 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
Gas pipe may not run inside air ducts, chimneys or vents, clothes chutes, dumbwaiters or elevator shafts.
Question 13
How may gas piping be installed in a concrete slab floor?
Correct answer: In a channel or a sleeve, protected
IFGC 2021 404 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
Gas pipe in solid floors runs in channels or in a sleeve or conduit, so it can be protected and replaced; it is not cast directly into the concrete.
Question 14
Where must the shutoff valve for a gas appliance be located?
Correct answer: Same room, within 6 ft, accessible
IFGC 2021 409.5.1 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
Each appliance needs an accessible shutoff valve in the same room and within 6 ft, upstream of the union or connector.
Question 15
Where is a sediment trap installed on a gas appliance supply?
Correct answer: Downstream of the shutoff, near the inlet
IFGC 2021 408.4 / UPC 2021 Ch. 12
The sediment trap (a tee with a capped nipple pointing down) catches dirt and scale before they reach the appliance controls.
